What is UNBEATABLE

UNBEATABLE is a rhythm game where music is illegal and you do crimes. At least thats what the advertising says.

Really, it’s more a rhythm game about finding yourself in a world that hates you. It’s a game about fighing against a system that oppresses, it’s realizing you can’t do it alone, its a deeply psychological journey through the character’s mind.

And most importantly, it’s a game with fantastic music, and great charting. See most rhythm games like to take existing music and license them. Well D-Cell, the developers of the game, instead worked with Peak Divide to create an entirely original soundtrack for the game, both for the rhythm game sections and for the overworld and cutscenes. Its got a really nice artstyle with anime style 2d characters on a 3D world, and rhythm heaven style minigames during some bosses.

The main charting of the game is like muse dash, but the side switching and occasional switches to another style during the story lead to interesting moments that I shall not spoil here.

I’d been waiting for this game since the white label demo first came out in 2021, and not only did i have high expectations, but my expectations were also fully exceeded. All in all, it’s a great game.

The issues

The game does have some snags. For starters, I’m a linux user, and the game doesn’t have a native linux port, so I had to use proton. Some proton versions like the default one seem to not handle cutscenes very well, and the way fullscreen is handled tends to break sometimes. Scenes occasionally fail to switch and sometimes the indicators for what you can interact with don’t pop up. In late game, even when the screens turned black, the indicator for talking to some characters remains and you can repeat dialogue which breaks the game. These do absolutely keep the game from reaching 10/10 status, or even 9/10 status but I give the game an 8/10. If those got fixed I’d gladly bump it to a 9, and if some other minor issues were addressed it could very well be a 10/10.
